Oduduwa is regarded as the mythical progenitor and first king of the Yoruba people. According to Yoruba oral traditions, he is a revered figure who played a foundational role in the creation and establishment of Yoruba civilization. Here’s a brief history of Oduduwa in Yoruba land:
Origins:
Oduduwa is believed to have descended from the heavens, sent by the supreme deity Olodumare to create order in the world. He carried a chain, a rooster, and a handful of sand, which he used to form the earth at Ile-Ife, considered the spiritual and historical heart of Yoruba land.
Role As A Leader:
He became the first ruler of Ile-Ife, which is regarded as the cradle of Yoruba culture and civilization. Oduduwa is credited with introducing centralized governance and organizing the early Yoruba people into a cohesive society.
Legacy of Children:
Oduduwa’s descendants are said to have founded several Yoruba kingdoms, such as Oyo, Benin, Ketu, Sabe, and others. His children and grandchildren became the progenitors of many Yoruba ruling dynasties, earning him the title “Father of the Yoruba.
